Riggott out to impress Jones

Chris Riggott is hoping that a trial spell at Cardiff City will see him land a permanent contract.

The centre-half has linked up with the Bluebirds following his release by Middlesbrough at the end of last season.

His departure from the Riverside Stadium brought to an end a seven-year association with Boro.

Unfortunately for Riggott, his time in the North East was blighted by injury and a departure became inevitable once reinforcements were drafted in above him.

Fitness

He is back to full fitness now, however, and feels he is still capable of doing a job at the business end of English football.

The opportunity to impress at Cardiff was too good to turn down and, having spent some time training with the Welsh outfit, the 30-year-old turned out for their reserves in a 5-0 victory over Llanelli on Wednesday.

Bluebirds boss Dave Jones was on hand to run an eye over Riggott and must decide whether he is deserving of a full-time deal.

Cardiff have made a flying start to the season, but know strength in depth is vital to any side harbouring ambitions of mounting a promotion push.

Cardiff City are set to sign former Middlesbrough defender Chris Riggott subject to a "rigorous" fitness test.

The 30-year-old former England under-21 international is a free agent after Middlesbrough released him in June.

But has been plagued by injuries in recent years as well as during build-up to signing for the Bluebirds.

"We've agreed contracts with Chris and his agent," said Cardiff manager Dave Jones, "It's now [about] putting him through a rigorous medical."

Riggott joined Middlesbrough from his home-town club Derby for £2m in 2003.

He has recently been training with the Bluebirds, but has suffered knee and calf problems that delayed the Bluebirds settling on a bid to make him a permanent signing.

Jones says the fitness test will determine Riggott's future with the club and that if he makes the grade, the player faces a tough conditioning regime before making his debut.

"Don't forget, he's missed a lot of pre-season like a lot of our players that we've brought in late," said Jones

"So he'll be similar with what we did with Jason [Koumas]. He will need a really good blow-out for quite a few weeks, but once we get him in and everything else full-time, then we can do all that."

Riggott joins skipper Craig Bellamy, Koumas, Seyi Olofinjana, Danny Drinkwater and Tom Heaton among signings for this season.

Cardiff City have signed Chris Riggott after the former Middlesbrough defender passed what the Bluebirds described as a "rigorous" fitness test.

But he will not be considered for Saturday's Championship clash away at Ipswich Town as he builds his fitness.

Former England Under-21 international Riggott, 30, was a free agent after Middlesbrough released him in June.

He has been plagued by injuries in recent years as well as during the build-up to signing for the Bluebirds.

He has been training with the Bluebirds, but suffered knee and calf problems that delayed the Bluebirds settling on a bid to make him a permanent signing.

Jones said this week that the fitness test would determine Riggott's future with the club and that, if he made the grade, the player would face a tough conditioning regime before making his debut.

"Don't forget, he's missed a lot of pre-season like a lot of our players that we've brought in late," said Jones

Good luck to him.
