This article offers a summation of why Leeds are the media darlings of the Championship...

Quote

Here’s a guilty admission: there were few journalists outside of the East Midlands who would have put Frank Lampard’s Derby County – and they are, inevitably, Frank Lampard’s Derby County – down as their first preference for promotion to the Premier League.

As is usually the case, there are a range of human reasons and motivations behind this as opposed to a monolithic media conspiracy theory against *checks notes* the people of Derby. Most obviously, with one of the biggest global fanbases in the Championship owing to their dalliances with European football for much of the Premier League’s nineties and noughties golden era, Leeds would most likely have attracted wider interest.

Then there was Leeds’ narrative redemption arc: from ‘doing a Leeds’ and financial oblivion, to League One strugglers, to the anarchic absurdism of the Massimo Cellino era, to contenders once more under Marcelo Bielsa. Derby, meanwhile, are a little harder to package: the Championship big spenders always in and around the play-offs, forever falling just short, whose last season in the top flight ended with a record-low 11 points in total and a miserable 20 goals scored.

Surely they've made a mistake there! Have they missed a digit off the figures for the famous club from the other side of the trent?

We know they usually have extra digits, but something must be wrong with those numbers.

A couple of questions on those stats;

That figure that says the Premier League gets 3x the audience of the Championship. Is that domestic audience?

I can't imagine the Championship having much of a global appeal.

How do they measure the TV audience, do they go round counting how many are watching in pubs?

Or is the stat how many TVs are receiving it?
