DERBY County plan to take another look at John Rooney, the younger brother of Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney.

The 19-year-old midfielder has trained with the Rams for the last three days and was set to play for the Reserves against Sheffield United at Alfreton yesterday afternoon but the fixture was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Nigel Clough said Rooney had done well in training and the Rams manager will ask Macclesfield Town if the youngster can return next week and play for the Reserves against Sheffield Wednesday.

"Macclesfield are preparing for their game on Saturday and I would have thought John would be in the squad for that. We'll see if we can get him back for the Reserve game next Wednesday," said Clough.

"We have to see him in a game now but he has looked OK in training. We can see he has got something.

"He is only 19, so we will have to assess if he is going to be knocking on the door next season if we take him.

"Is he as good as Ben Pringle and some of the younger players we have got coming through, like Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Connolly?

"We will try to assess that in a game next week."

Rooney, who has made 33 League appearances for Macclesfield, is out of contract in the summer.

Macclesfield boss Keith Alexander has tipped the youngster to play at a much higher level but he concedes that the League Two club may struggle to keep hold of Rooney in the summer if he impresses the Rams.

"He is a player who deserves to play at a higher level but whether he will move on in the summer is a different matter," said Alexander.

"Some stay and some go when there is interest in them. He is a very, very good footballer and if he does move elsewhere in the summer, then we will just have to make do without him."

Asked if having such a famous brother could have an adverse effect on Rooney, Clough said: "It is not going to be easy for him. His brother is so special that John is always going to be in his shadow in anything he accomplishes.

"But John is young, he is just trying to make his own way whether it be in League Two or whatever, and he wants to be a professional footballer."

interesting report on him on the bbc

John has got a fantastic touch, that and his passing ability is the best I have seen for someone of his age," said Askey.

"Then there is his awareness - in terms of his footballing brain he is streets ahead of a lot of other players."

Remind you of anyone?

Alexander took over as first-team manager in February 2008 and immediately noticed Rooney and Shaun Brisley, who has gone on to establish himself as a regular in Town's backline.

Alexander also pointed to Rooney's ability to spot a pass and described his best position as either just behind the strikers or as part of a three-man midfield.

Both Askey and Alexander pointed to a similarity between Wayne and John in terms of their on-field behaviour.

"He has a good temperament, very much like his brother - he gets mad and angry with everybody, including himself," is how Alexander put it.

Askey reckons: "He has that fiery will to win at all times and sometimes he gets frustrated with other players because he can see things that they don't."

Really! I didn't know that!

Sarcasm btw

My point is that anyone can score a good one-off goal, the key is keeping it up and 4 goals in 35 games is not that

yeh ano but apparently he is a consistently good player
