The Derby Ram

I’d like to sound you out about the ‘Derby Ram’ guys … well, first, let me say that it’s daib0 from Reading’s Royals Rendezvous, but more importantly  a football fan all round. Many other clubs are featured on the RR forum with equal interest to the Royals (absolutely true, we’re only two years and a half old, but we’ve currently got 727 Reading topics and 683 general footie topics!).

I read whilst preparing the match threads a couple of seasons ago that the most important nickname for Derby – the Rams  - probably came about because of the local folk/regimental  song ‘The Derby Ram’, so not surprisingly the club’s mascot is ‘Rammie’.

And what was this song then? In today’s fast-flowing pop world these old ‘folk’ and ‘popular’ tunes often get left in oblivion.

So I thought I would resurrect it for the Reading fans, here it SUPPOSEDLY  is (sorry, if the horizontal view appears vertically!):

Music –

Words –

But here on You Tube, these are not hardly the same melody as I reproduced just above:

And these are not even the same words!:

But anyway, is it resurrecting it for you guys? Is the tune – or tunes to the words it seems -  still well-known around your parts? Any better links to give? Would be great to have some comments back to relay over on my forum ...

Cheers,

Daib0

My parents had a cassette with a version of it on that I vaguely remember hearing when I was very young, it had more or less the same words as the second youtube video I think.

They also had this brilliant but cringe-worthy cd (http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Rams-Songs/dp/B001H717RU/ref=dm_cd_album_lnkthat had a version called "The Derby Rams" with adapted lyrics about Derby County and the Baseball Ground.

I was actually talking to some big folk fans here in Swansea recently and they mentioned this song when I said I was from Derby, so I guess it has some fame still in traditional folk circles.  I would say the majority of Derby people today have very little to no knowledge of the song though.

There are still a lot of signs of the ram link around though: Ram Fm is a local radio station and there's the ram statue in the city centre too.
