Guest
Having spent the day reading Sam's story, i was surprised to discover that the Ossie End clock, now in the East Stand was bought for the club by Sam Longson in 1966 to celebrate becoming chairman of the club. RamNut
More on Sam's Story. I found the story of Brian Clough's departure quite depressing to read. It was bad enough at the time. Years later I came to have some sympathy with Longson because Brian was certainly difficult to deal with. The story of his outspokenness and media work creating friction is well known. But i was less thrilled to read how Sam would use the media too to deal with Brian. It seems like double standards and my sympathies are now swinging back slightly towards Brian. A few other interesting points of note were: that Sam resisted the attempt to get Brian back when he was approached in the late 70s and on the cusp of great achievements with Forest by which time he claims to have recognised that Brian was something of a reformed character.... .... his claim that Ralph Hann had decided to leave when they dispensed with Tim Ward. I had previously read that he was informed of his dismissal by Longson in a brutal and brief manner as they passed in a corridor. ....and finally regarding that famous televised contract signing on the pitch before the Sheffield United match....it transpired that although Clough signed the contract, the club didn't sign it. Apparently it was months before Longson signed it. So much internal politics and shenanigans.
