Still no full back cover?

Recommended Posts

Despite all the signings at Pride Park this summer, we still only have two specialist full-backs in the squad, one of whom - Roberts - is in my view not good enough.

Assuming we don't strengthen in that area, who will be the back up? My guess is Leacock and Croft (if not sold) plus a fit again Green will cover right-back, with Shackell and Pearson covering left-back.

This is clearly not ideal, but hey, we've got six goalkeepers, obviously all of whom will definitely be required at some stage this season eh??

What part of we are looking for a full back don't you understand? Why would you assume we won't strengthen that area?!

We have wasted money already on Lezgdins and Robinson, neither of whom are any better than what's already at the club (I watch both Derby and Burton, so feel able to make that judgement). That money would have been better spent strengthening elsewhere

Pre-season training is already underway and while I accept a new full-back may still come in, we need two players in those positions really - a better replacement for Roberts and cover for Brayford. I very much doubt that will happen now.

Agree that we need LB cover, but RB might be more difficult as Brayford is clearly first choice. Can always use emergency loans for either position although not ideal.

As for signing the other players, we did need numbers (e.g. Robinson) and if Clough rates Legzdins and thinks he will be our #2 and better sign him than let him go elsewhere. For me Bywater and Deeney can go with Atkins being loaned out as well

I watch Burton as well, and Legzdins is better than Deeney. Severn/Atkins aren't ready yet so neither of them are backup options at this point.

We'll let Bywater go, and send out at least one of, if not both, Severn and Atkins, which leaves Fielding>Legz>Deeney as 1-2-3.

If the opportunity came up, I think we'd let Deeney go. Wouldn't say the Legzdins money was wasted.

Robinson - agree.

Why do you doubt that will happen now? Are there not 6 / 7 weeks left in this window?

So you moan about not having cover for one position... yet you say we have wasted money on covering other positions.. Make up your mind.

I think we currently have excessive cover in the goalkeeping department - unless Bywater is definitely going somewhere then I genuinely don't see the point of the Lezgdins signing. As for Severn and Atkins, the latter is 20/21 now, not much younger than Fielding. If he's not even good enough to be a number 2 keeper at that age, why have we given him a new contract?

My main debate with Robinson is that he's not good enough and too similar to Tyson - I don't think we needed to sign both. I'd hate to see a promising youngster like Ball have his development held back by journeymen. Where's the proven Championship goalscorer??

Come back and moan when the window's closed. It really is that simple. How can you moan about not having cover in one place but having too much elsewhere when the squad hasn't be finalised? It's a joke.

Please explain the "proven Championship goal scorer" to me.. Kevin Phillips or Shane Long.?

Kevin Phillips type would only touch a top 6 side and a Shane Long type would move on to the Premier League, if not promoted already.. and also costing £5m plus.

So for a club like ours, we would have to buy a player who was a decent scorer in League 1, SPL or in the Premiership reserve teams and that would only be a loan deal at most.

That's how I see it anyway.

Wasn't it intimated either by Glick or Clough that even if no offers come in for Bywater then they'd consider paying him off. Either way, I really don't see him playing for us again.

Atkins - I'd say we should have 4 keepers at the club - for me they'd be Fielding, Legz, Severn and Atkins. At this point Atkins still has more time to develop than Deeney who's likely not to from here on in.

As soon as a goalscorer proves himself in this division he will be of to the prem, the trick is finding the next striker with the ability to prove himself.

Agree with this. It's the teams which pluck these players before they're worth a lot which seem to do well. Think Doyle, Long, Graham, Holt, Dobbie etc. etc. etc.

So it is nice to see us looking to do the same with the likes of Maguire.

This deserve multiple likes. Thing is, goalscorers are like chocolates in boxes.

Where do all these strong-viewed, new posters come from? They're in abundance in this forum - they post about 5 times then don't come back. They always seem to have a vendetta against the club or a player in particular as well. Hmm.

Something smells fishy, and it's not my girlfriend, her legs are closed.

I don't think clough feels a massive need to carry big cover at full backs, don't forget you can always lose the loan market as well. He has mentioned he is looking for a utility defender who can cover across the back 4. Not that many sides have done much business yet, just us and the foxes down the road
