According to Jim Smith’s autobiography it was because he was suffering from injuries and he didn’t feel that he was giving the club “value for money†any more. When you look at his appearance stats for West Ham – he was there two full seasons after he left us and only played 43 games – so basically, was only fit for half of each season. He then went back to Hadjuk Split for a season and only played 11 games before retiring. So in retrospect TBE was probably right. (apparently) Yeah, even The Bald Eagle wouldn't challenge him on that one, although he once gave Wanchope a right upper cut if memory serves me right.
