BMW has announced that it is withdrawing its team from Formula One at the end of the current season.

The German manufacturer is the second major backer to withdraw from the sport in the space of eight months - Honda having pulled out in December last year.

schueys back

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER will make a shock return as a driver for Ferrari at the Valencia Grand Prix.

The F1 legend will be drafted in by team bosses to replace Felipe Massa until the Brazilian flier is fit enough to return to the cockpit.

A statement on Ferrari's official website revealed Schumacher will undergo a specific training regime over the next few days before being confirmed as Massa's replacement for the next Grand Prix on August 23.

This is looking like an incredibly interesting season.

Brawn started well but Red Bull could easily fly ahead of Button's lead. McLaren's car looked sweet on Sunday and Schumacher's back! It could go to four teams. It could go right down to the wire should McLaren keep improving and winning grand prixes.

Massa - out of hospital ; -

Felipe Massa has begun his journey back to his home in Brazil, nine days after suffering life-threatening injuries in a crash during qualifying at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Ferrari driver left hospital and boarded a private jet this morning. Massa appeared in good spirits as he left Budapest's Ferihegy International Airport accompanied by his wife Raffaela, who is six months pregnant with their first child, and Dino Altman, the family doctor.

The 28-year-old underwent surgery on multiple skull fractures after a spring that had fallen from the back of Rubens Barrichello's car struck his helmet at 162mph, dazing him and causing him to lose control of his car and crash into tyre barriers at high speed.

Massa is expected to arrive in Sao Paulo tonight, where he will undergo further tests in hospital before he returns home later this week.

That's pretty petty to be honest.

Williams have said they will not approve a request from [url=http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/ferrari]Ferrari that Michael Schumacher be permitted one day's testing at the wheel of the 2009 Ferrari F60 prior to returning to the starting grid for the European grand prix at Valencia on 23 August.

Ferrari have been testing with Schumacher at the Mugello circuit using a 2007 car fitted with GP2 tyres, but felt they had to ask all the other teams if they would agree to a special dispensation allowing the seven-time world champion, who is deputising for the injured Felipe Massa, to circumvent the testing restrictions.

"While we welcome Michael Schumacher back to [url=http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/formulaone]Formula One, the fact is that any form of in-season circuit testing is strictly prohibited, a regulation clearly laid down by the FIA and adhered to by all of the teams," Frank Williams was quoted as saying by [url=http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77534]www.autosport.com.

"It was for this reason that [Jaime] Alguersuari, who drove a Formula One car for the very first time in Hungary [eight days ago], did not have the opportunity to familiarise himself with the Toro Rosso before he made his race debut. Williams sees no distinction between Alguersuari's situation and Schumacher's and feels that any deviation from the rule would create a precedent for the future."

Williams added: "In a similar situation, Williams would unhesitatingly use its current test driver. For the sake of consistency and fairness, therefore, we oppose Ferrari's proposal to test ahead of the European grand prix."

It will require the unanimous agreement of all the competing teams, as well as the sport's governing body, if Schumacher is to be regarded as an exceptional case. It now seems that the German will have to wait until free practice on the Friday at Valencia before sampling this year's Ferrari for the first time.
