Dickov to Oldham

Oldham Athletic have refused to deny that former City striker Paul Dickov will become the club's new manager.

The 37-year-old has emerged as a leading contender in the last 48 hours to replace Dave Penney at the helm.

He was one of 10 candidates interviewed for the vacant role last week along with caretaker boss Martin Gray and Mark Crossley.

Club officials have delayed making an official announcement with their preferred man out of the country on holiday.

As a result, Gray departed Boundary Park on Wednesday having been in temporary charge since Penney's exit on May 6.

Former City winger Paul Simpson and Jim Gannon were also linked with the position, although it is understood Gannon is close to finalising a return to Stockport County.

Should Dickov or Crossley get the nod, it would continue Athletic's track record of appointing young managers.

Jimmy Frizzell, Joe Royle, Andy Ritchie, Iain Dowie and John Sheridan were all given the manager's job without much in the way of previous experience.

However, the new boss faces a tough task next season to build on the club's 16th place in 2009/10.

League One contains a number of bigger clubs with bigger budgets, so mid-table may be the best the new man can hope for.

Striker Paul Dickov set for Oldham Athletic job

Oldham will unveil their new manager on Wednesday at 1000 BST, with former Scotland striker Paul Dickov expected to get his first managerial role.

The Latics parted company with Dave Penney last month after a year in charge and caretaker boss Martin Gray left the club last week.

Dickov, 37, ended the season at Leeds but is best known for his spells at Manchester City and Leicester.

Oldham finished just two points above the relegation zone in League One.

Interesting to see everyone wanting to sign him up 6 months ago whilst Daveo was saying he's past it. Good move by Dickov, nothing worse than seeing 35+ years old that are past there best still prancing around the pitch whilst being utterly useless.
