MILES Addison is to have an operation on his troublesome foot and the Derby County defender could be out for up to a year.

The 21-year-old will fly to San Francisco a week today to see Dr Amol Saxena, who is one of the leading specialists when it comes to this particular injury.

Addison will undergo surgery on his right foot a few days later.

"We have found somebody in San Francisco who specialises in this kind of injury. It is a rare injury but he's treated about 75 similar cases, so he's about as good as there is in the world at the moment," said Rams manager Nigel Clough.

"Miles will have the operation and he will be out for up to 12 months.

"He could be back earlier but it could be up to that period, which would rule him out of the whole of next season.

"Miles is 21 and has got another 10 years or so in him but if we don't fix the injury now, he will always be dogged by the problem.

"So we will get him over there and in the best hands that we can.

"He goes out a week today and is due to have the operation the Monday after."

Addison, who can also play central midfield, has made only 10 starts in the League in the past 12 months.

He limped out of the home victory over Blackpool in February last year with a stress fracture of his foot and the injury ended his season.

He started this season alongside Jake Buxton at the heart of the defence and scored in the home victories over Peterborough United and Plymouth Argyle but the problem flared again.

His last appearance was in the FA Cup third-round replay against Millwall at Pride Park Stadium when he hobbled off before half-time.

"Whether it takes six months or 12 months, we're trying to find a solution to Miles' problem. We don't want any temporary stuff," Clough said last month.

"It is a rare injury and there are different opinions. Was he born with it? Has it been made worse by football?"

Addison is the club's reigning young player of the year and won his first England Under-21 cap earlier this season.

Dr Saxena is a podiatrist who specialises in sports medicine and surgery.

Podiatry is a branch of medicine devoted to the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle and lower leg including stress fractures.

Addison will undergo what is called surgical fixation of his navicular. The navicular is a bone in front of the ankle towards the inside of the foot.
