Varney back with The Rams

Striker Luke Varney is back training with Derby County after his half-season loan at Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

However, the former Crewe Alexandra striker will be unavailable for selection for Derby's FA Cup Third Round tie at Millwall on Saturday as he must serve a one-match suspension after picking up five cautions whilst with the Hillsborough side.

He was due to miss the final game of his loan at Wednesday against Blackpool on Monday, but the game was postponed which means his ban has been carried over to this weekend.

Varney joined the Rams just over a year ago from Charlton Athletic after a loan spell, but has made just 14 appearances and scoring 1 goal. He spent the latter part of last season on loan at Wednesday and returned there in August where he scored 4 goals in 19 matches.

Said Manager Nigel Clough: "Luke's loan is up and he is back with us at the moment, although he is suspended for Saturday.

"We are still in discussions with Sheffield Wednesday about what they want to do with Luke in terms of extending the loan or a permanent deal, so at the moment it is a case of seeing what comes up in the next few weeks."

If Savage was given a chance in the first team can't see why Varney shouldn't. Don't see why we would consider extending the loan, all we're doing is helping a club in the same half of the table. If they want him cash only.

Give the lad another chance, it's not if we're blessed with loads of options, it's more likly to be his wages. But i doubt weds have loads of cash to spend on them either, so I don't know. Maybe they pay half and we pay half?

he needs to be played as a striker, and given a run of games, we have only ever judged him on 2 bad games where normally(when i see them at least) hes played out of position uneffectivly.

hes scored a few for wednesday, and has come close a few times, any one see his overhead kick that smasked against the post?

he looks a bit sharper every week, id say at a better team than wednesday hed of scored a few more
