Different cultures, different ways Paul, though in many ways we're not that much different in the UK except in terms of time taken - most accidents have an insurance value that all lawyers will know - loss of a leg/arm; loss of a breadwinner/non breadwinner; death v injury etc.  In our culture we want there to be a reasonable time to pass, then we have a court case/inquiry, then damages are sorted after guilt is established.  Often companies won't pay anything out any quicker  because their insurers are handling it and won't want to admit any liability in advance.

Which is right or better is another debate

I guess, it just seems cold and quick. I can't even imagine even starting to discuss.
