Over 24000 at his testimonial, which came after the death of his son, and he trusted a business associate too much with his investment and his business folded. Everyone felt for him and turned up to support him in his hour of need.

Is that why he comes back quite often D_R once a ram and all, know playing for Derby was probably the most successful spell of his playing career, seems like he has a strong bond and not just with John O'Hare.

Not sure ZZ, but I am confident that he realises that he was appreciated both as a player and as a genuine all- round nice guy family man. IIRC, both Alan and John lived in the Ockbrook area, which probably explains their on-going long term friendship.

On the matter of the testimonial attendance, to put it into perspective, apart from Ted McMinn, I am struggling to recall another player who even reached 10k.

One First Division manager (? Docherty?) said that if you stop Gladys playing, you stop Derby, so he was highly regarded in the game as well. (Trouble was, he doubled up the marking on him and we still put 4 past them the following week!)
