Derby County boss Nigel Clough wants to snap up Welsh right back Ryan Shotton on loan from Tony Pulis's Stoke City.

Clough is chasing the young Welshman who was at Tranmere Rovers for first-team experience last season and he hopes that Pulis will let him go to play in the Championship.

Shotton would be ideal for the struggling Rams who have been looking to improve their defence. He is tipped to play for the Potters eventually, but his chances are limited just now.

Clough has switched to Shotton after hitting snags in a move for Manchester City youngster Javan Vidal, who is going with England to the under-20 World Cup this week and is unavailable.

Ryan signed his first-ever professional contract with the Club in the summer of 2007 following impressive performances at both Academy and Reserve level.

The Fenton-born centre half is strong and quick, and is definitely one for the future.

Made his debut for the first team in the friendly at Macclesfield Town in July, 2007, before moving out on loan to Altrincham last season.

A similar spell out on loan with a lower league club Could be on the cards this campaign, as the talented defender looks to continue his development.

But on Sky Sports

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has confirmed young defender Ryan Shotton is in contention to start their opening Premier League fixture against Burnley.

Andy Wilkinson and Andy Griffin were widely expected to command the Potters' full-back positions this season, although Pulis believes the 20-year-old is a genuine contender.

The youngster spent the majority of last season on loan at Tranmere and impressed enough for a few clubs to ask whether he was part of Stoke's long-term plans.

Pulis has been pleased by his performances so far in pre-season and sees no reason why he cannot challenge his more experienced regulars for a full-back berth.
