DERBY County are keen to sign Australian International Patrick Kisnorbo.

The 28-year-old defender caught the eye during Saturday's opening fixture of pre-season against Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.

He played 63 minutes of the 1-0 victory at centre-back and twice went close to scoring.

It was his goal-bound header that Chris Porter glanced in for the only strike of the game and early in the second half Kisnorbo saw a header crash against the bar.

He is a free agent after being released by Leicester City at the end of last season and a number of clubs are interested in him, including Crystal Palace where he trained last week.

But Derby plan to hold talks with the player today and are favourites to land him.

"We were very pleased with what we saw from Patrick for around an hour," said Rams manager Nigel Clough.

"It is well documented that centre-half is a position we are looking to improve and he may well be an improvement on what we have got.

"He has got Championship experience and although he is not 6ft 3in or 6ft 4in, he competes well and he can play full-back as well, so it covers us in that position.

"We will sit down and have a chat with him."

Kisnorbo appeared for 45 minutes in Palace's friendly against Borehamwood on Thursday. Palace have since jetted off on tour to the United States.

Derby will not be following up their interest in former Norwich City midfielder Mark Fotheringham, who is also a free agent.

He trained with the Rams all last week and played 55 minutes at Burton. Clough was pleased with Fotheringham's display and has been impressed with the 25-year-old but feels Derby already have three "good" central midfielders.

"I have had a chat with Mark and the problem is we have got three central midfielders, good ones in Paul Green, Robbie Savage and Stephen Pearson, all of them on contract," said Clough.

"So we probably cannot pursue anything with Mark but for a week I have never seen a trialist come in and work as hard as he has."

Derby are still looking at the possibility of bringing in a young midfielder on loan from a Premier League club.

Another trialist, goalkeeper Saul Deeney, played the second half against his old club Burton.

Deeney is training with the Rams with a view to a possible contract.

Kin ell the lad did it, played a blinder and got his contract offer, I'm just glad it aint Billy Davies offering the contract, won't cost so much to release him in January when Cloughie realises he's pants.

PATRICK Kisnorbo (left) will be handed another chance to impress Derby County today.

The Australian international caught the eye in the victory over Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium a week ago and the defender has been training with the Rams at Moor Farm.

The 28-year-old free agent will now face Chesterfield at Saltergate this afternoon.

Derby are considering whether or not to offer the former Leicester City player a deal.

"We have had a brief chat with Patrick about next season," said Rams manager Nigel Clough.

"He has had a few offers from other clubs and it is just with Shaun Barker coming in, can we pursue that one.

"But we have been very impressed with Patrick and what he has done so far."

Clough has four centre-backs in his plans for this season – Barker, Miles Addison, Dean Leacock and Jake Buxton.

"We are happy with the way that department is shaping up," said Clough.

"We have four, and that's why we are considering whether we really need Patrick or do we dip into the loan market if we need to.

"We think over 60 games will probably need a fifth centre-half."

Crystal Palace are also keen on Kisnorbo having played in their pre-season victory over Borehamwood.

“Patrick just felt there was not much point in him playing another game for us and risking injury if there wasn’t a deal agreed,†explained Rams manager Nigel Clough.

“It is still something we are discussing with him and his representative at the moment.â€Â

Come on Nigel - Sort it !! else he will go elsewhere.

I agree let him go elsewhere, Leicester terminated his contract now if he was Championship quality why would they?

Search Kisnorbo on a Leicester forum and before they released him Leicester fans were saying how shocking he is, plays a blinder 1 out of 10 games and is also injury prone.

Let him go to Palace and look out for another Tompkins we can loan in from the Prem if money is that tight.
