Derby striker Rob Hulse has turned down Middlesbrough for the second time in a week.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate desperately wanted Rams ace Hulse, 29, to boost his attack following the sale of Tuncay and Stewart Downing.

He originally tried to sign Hulse on transfer deadline day last Tuesday with a big-money £4million bid which tempted cash-strapped Derby.

And Southgate returned yesterday with an offer to take Hulse on loan before completing a permanent move in January.

But Hulse, who scored 18 goals last term after signing from Sheffield United in July 2008 for

£1.75m, has once again declined Boro’s advances.

And Southgate is now turning his attention to other targets, including QPR marksman Heidar Helguson.

NIGEL Clough has dismissed talk of Derby County striker Rob Hulse (left) joining Middlesbrough on loan with a view to a permanent deal when the transfer window opens again in January.

"I don't see that – how would it benefit us?" said the Rams manager.

Middlesbrough desperately wanted Hulse to boost their attack for the Championship campaign as they look to make an immediate return to the Premier League following relegation.

They waded in with an offer of £4m-plus for the 29-year-old on deadline day last Tuesday but the player rejected a move, saying it did not feel right.

Recent speculation has pointed to Middlesbrough taking Hulse on loan before signing him in January.

It has also been suggested Derby could make a loan move for Wolves' striker Sam Vokes, the player who was lined up as a replacement if Hulse had left.

But Clough has brushed off both ideas.

"Our policy has always been that if we get a big offer of significant value for a player then we will look at it," he said.

"So I don't see how letting Rob out on loan would benefit us.

"If it rears its head again in January, then we will deal with it.

"That is the obvious time as well because Chris Porter will be fit around then and we'll know a little bit more about where we are in the League.

"That is the time it will get examined again, if clubs come in for Rob. The main thing is that Rob is with us now and we are delighted.

"Hopefully he will get some goals for us in the next few weeks and months.

"The problem with transfer windows is that everything becomes pressurised at the end.

"Clubs come on in the last day or two and it becomes difficult to satisfy everybody to do a good deal.

"It would be much easier if we had an extra period of time both for the player and the clubs as well to get their head round things. It pressurises too many clubs and players into making maybe rash decisions.

"You look at it and think 'the window has been open since the end of last season so why weren't these deals done in the last two months?'"

Reports say Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is now turning his attention to other targets, including Queens Park Rangers forward Heidar Helguson.

Vokes is also being linked with Boro.

The window for loan signings has re-opened for Football League clubs.

"We have made a couple of enquiries but I don't think anything is imminent," said Clough. "We have got a good 19 or so players fit at the moment and Steve Davies should be back in a week or so, so we are pretty happy with that."
