DERBY COUNTY are set to join the race for Kilmarnock star Liam Kelly when the January transfer window opens next week.

The midfielder is on the radar of the Midlands club and Rams boss Nigel Clough sent a scout to watch Kelly in action on Boxing Day.

Kelly, who won his first Scotland cap in November’s friendly win over Luxembourg, scored the only goal from the penalty spot in that win over Hearts.

The 22-year-old has also been linked with SPL champions Celtic and Premiership duo West Ham United and Norwich City.

Kelly is available to sign on a pre-contract next month and while Killie boss Kenny Shiels is desperate for him to sign a new deal, he could be tempted by a return south of the border.

Derby dropped to 12th in the English Championship after defeat to Burnley on Wednesday and Clough is keen to bring in new recruits – but must find value with a limited budget at Pride Park.

The County gaffer has had success in the Scottish market before with former Kilmarnock duo Craig Bryson and striker Conor Sammon, who moved to Pride Park after an initial spell at Wigan Athletic.

Speaking in March, Clough said: “The one thing you get up in Scotland is good honest players and the wages are more realistic.

“We will just keep an eye on a few players who might be available or out of contract.” - http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/kilmarnock-star-liam-kelly-is-target-1508170

Just listened to his (NC) "Pre-match Charlton" interview on Rams Player and thought I'd take a quote from what he was saying

"That's what the Owners want us to do, build players through the academy and sell them to strengthen other areas"

Will Hughes going?

Bet Cloughie is looking at cheap midfielders to replace him and then most of the money will be with the Owners..

To be honest we wont know if Derby have agreed any pre-contracts anyway until the summer.

And we are not going to sign anyone unless we sell.

If Derby sell a player then i will probably start to take more of an interest. At the moment the important thing is that we beat Charlton and try to get our league position up to 8th or 9th in order to attract good players next season.

Of course there could still be a playoff push but i realistically think not.

yes, it is, cus I don't get excited about other teams, you dirty filthy Swein hunt pig dog *spit*

I didn't mean that, I once got excited about a hot bird allegedly fancying me, it came to nowt of course but that was a rumour that got me excited.

But when it comes to Derby, nope, nothing since rumours of Stephen Pearson's loan to Bristol City first came to light.
