Brammie Steve
Is anyone out there old enough to remember when football was a game to be enjoyed for its own sake. The players were ordinary working folk who played for the companionship, friendly rivalry and to bring a breath of fresh air to themselves and others. After the match both sides would go to the local hostelry together or possibly to the village hall where their families would have clubbed together for a bring and share supper. I recall being told by men even older than me of times when club managers would gather round the pit head to ask emerging miners if they could turn up to play later on that saturday. Derby County is one of the founder memebers of the league. Newton Heath became Manchester United, From the above info I am glad that the Rams have kept that little bit closer to the true roots of the modern game. If the picture I'm describing sounds like a scene out of Mrs Miniver I don't care. That picture of English life personified what is so great about us and it certainly was not financially centred in greed and selfishness. The great Gordon Banks describes in his autobiog going to play in first division matches on the same bus as the supporters had caught and enjoying banter with them. I remember meeting the Derby greats in a local cafe called the Salad Bowl in Derby in 1973. To quote the question so often asked of Georgie Best.. Where did it all go wrong?
