Derby County v Stoke City

Chris Porter's early goal was enough to give Derby County a 1-0 victory over Premier League Stoke City at Pride Park this evening.

Porter headed home a Kris Commons cross early on in Derby's penultimate friendly ahead of the big kick-off at Leeds United on 7 August.

Rob Hulse and Robbie Savage were not involved as a precautionary measure as they reported in at Moor Farm today with sore groins.

As a result, Nigel Clough didn't want to risk further injury, so the pair watched on from the stands.

Glorious Derbyshire sunshine greeted both teams as they entered the immaculate-looking pitch at Pride Park after its course of summer treatment.

Going into tonight's game Derby's pre-season form had been impressive, and their sky-high confidence was evident early on as they took the game to the visitors.

On 7 minutes, Derby had the breakthough. Commons delivered a pin-point cross from the left and Porter got up above Collins to send a diving header low beyond Begovic.

It was once more another impressive team goal from Derby, patiently keeping the ball before Commons' quality came up trumps to find a hole in the Potters' backline.

That has been one of the highlights of pre-season so far; Derby have scored some fantastic team moves that wouldn't look out of place in the top flight.

Stoke came back strongly and from a trademark Rory Delap long throw they were almost level but Huth's glancing header was just off target.

On the evidence of the early exchanges, Derby were more than a match for their Premier League opponents as they sprayed the ball around the pitch in a confident manner and retained possession for long spells.

After such an eventful opening the latter stages of the first-half were lacked goalmouth action, but plenty of neat football from both sides.

Derby had an opportunity on the break to extend their lead before the break but Commons' ball to the onrushing Green was cleared in a nick of time by Huth's outstretched leg.

Stoke, a week behind Derby in their pre-season preparations, were eager to get the ball forwards to Sidebe and Fuller at every opportunity and pick up the play off them but Leacock and Anderson were on top of their game to keep the duo quiet.

The visitors are renowned for being dangerous from set plays and they were close to hauling themselves back onto level terms early in the 2nd half but Faye's header was well blocked from a corner.

Stoke were showing eagerness to get back into proceedings, but Derby's workrate and determination was second to none to keep City out.

Derby had to be patient in their search for an opportunity to extend their lead, but continued to use the ball well create neat passages of play.

That patient was almost rewarded when Roberts fed Pringle down the left and he delivered a dangerous ball into the box that a stretching Cywka was only inches away from connecting to.

Cywka then had a shot from long range that whistled just wide as he stamped his authority on the game with a second half masterclass.

He then weaved his way past two players from out wide on the right and blasted a curling left-foot effort which was just off target.

Derby made a selection of changes at various points of the 2nd half, introducing fresh legs to allow other members of the squad to collect important match time.

One of those introduced into the action was Dave Martin and he almost made it 2-0 with a stinging low drive with 3 minutes left but a deflection off Wilkinson took the ball wide.

Bywater wasn't called in action to make a save of any note throughout and he wasn't tested late on as Derby maintained their lead to secure another confidence-boosting pre-season victory.

Derby will round off their pre-season preparations by welcoming Birmingham City to Pride Park on Saturday.
