Clough in no rush to add to squad

NIGEL Clough says he is in no hurry to add further to his Derby County squad.

Clough has so far recruited Crewe Alexandra duo John Brayford and James Bailey, left-back Gareth Roberts from Doncaster Rovers and Polish forward Tomasz Cywka from Wigan Athletic.

He has also secured the services of winger David Martin, who joins on a permanent basis from Millwall, and former Sunderland defender Russell Anderson, on an extended deal.

Rams chief executive Tom Glick recently stated that the next priority was to bring in a striker and a right-sided midfielder.

But Clough is relaxed about the situation, with the transfer window open until the end of August and loan deals also among the options available.

"We are in a position where we are happy with the squad at the moment, although we have got scope to bring one or two more in if we want to but we are just going to take our time and see what's out there," said the manager.

"We've got more than two months until the transfer window closes, so there's plenty of time."

Derby have confirmed their interest in the likes of Ssausagehorpe United striker Gary Hooper, Sheffield United frontman Billy Sharp, Everton's James Vaughan and West Bromwich Albion forward Simon Cox.

However, Clough already has six strikers on the books in Rob Hulse, Chris Porter, Steve Davies, Kris Commons, Tomasz Cywka and Luke Varney.

"We've got six strikers, which should be enough over the course of a season, and then there are loan options too," Clough added. "We wouldn't want seven strikers, so we won't sign anyone else as it stands, unless someone leaves.

"If Commons and Davies are fit, that gives us two very good options straight away.

"Then you have Chris Porter, who we are looking to see the best of this season, and Tomasz Cywka, who we were all greatly encouraged by, from what we saw of him.

"Rob Hulse and Luke Varney make the six up, so there are plenty of options there to choose from.

"Loans also come into it, whether it be for a half-season or for a whole season.

"It would be nice to bring in loans out of choice rather than necessity this season."

As for the right side of midfield, Clough is keen to get Michael Tonge back on loan from Stoke City following his successful spell at Pride Park last season.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis says he is willing to listen to offers for Tonge (pictured) but Derby have previously stated they would be priced out of a permanent move for the former Sheffield United man.

"That situation hasn't changed," said Clough.

"We'd like Michael back and we've made our position clear to him and to Stoke. It's in their hands at the moment.

"We've got players who can play there – the likes of Steve Davies, Tomasz Cywka and Paul Green – so, once again, it's not an absolute necessity, as we've got people who can do a job in that position.

"There are one or two others we have looked at – both permanent and on loan – so we will just have to see how that situation develops."

Looks like we need to get rid of either Hulse or Varney then before we even try and get another striker in, problem is it'l be to late by then and we'l end up with short term loan deals again.

it's the same old tune tbh, it's the same rubbish he always comes out with, for a start commons and davies are never fit(at least they weren't last season which means they are liabilities and shouldn't be relied upon too mmuch) porter is also injued a lot, maybe he shouldn't be relied upon, tomas cywaca didn't score a goal for us while he was on loan last season, rob hulse is unhappy at the club and they want to shift him even though he was our top scorer, (what manager wants to sell their top scorer?) and luke varney has never been given a chance and was always played out of position
