Taylor breaks jaw in Carroll bust-up

TOON star Steven Taylor's jaw was broken after a shameful training ground bust-up with team-mate Andy Carroll.

Owner Mike Ashley has launched a probe into the row which has cast a dark shadow over Newcastle's promotion bid.

It is now understood defender Taylor, having just come back from injury, will miss the rest of the season.

Carroll, 21, was believed to be in hospital last night receiving treatment to a hand injury.

The shocking incident happened at Newcastle's Benton training HQ on Sunday.

Boss Chris Hughton issued a startled 'no comment' when I approached him yesterday.

But this latest nightmare scenario has stunned the Toon camp, who have been relentlessly focused on promotion back to the Premier League.

Officials at St James' Park fear the fall-out from the astonishing skirmish could have deep and damaging effects on the club.

The timing could not have been worse.

Newcastle are two points clear at the top of the Championship with a key away clash at Doncaster tonight.

England Under-21 international Carroll has played a crucial part in the march towards promotion with 15 goals this season.

A club source said: "Steven was hurt and won't play again this season.

"It wasn't nice to see, especially as everything has been pretty calm recently.

"No wonder Newcastle tried to keep it quiet.

"It was the talk of the training ground."

Taylor, 24, is a former England Under-21 captain and was called into the senior squad to play Germany in 2007.

He has been out of action since January with a knee injury and was hoping to make a comeback in the next two weeks.

His representatives were unavailable for comment last night.

But this is another disgraceful chapter to add to a catalogue of dark moments on Tyneside over the years.

Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer famously scrapped on the pitch in 2005, while Joey Barton was jailed for six months following a fight in Liverpool city centre after a game at Wigan on Boxing Day in 2007.

Carroll is no stranger to controversy. He came to blows with Charles N'Zogbia last season which saw the Frenchman flogged to Wigan.
