BILLY Davies defended his record as Preston manager after Nottingham Forest's automatic promotion hopes were dealt another damaging blow at Deepdale by a 3-2 defeat.

Forest boss Davies remains a hate figure among Preston followers after he controversially quit the Lancashire outfit to take over at Derby in 2006.

Booed and jeered as he took his place in the visiting dug-out, the fiery Scot's day soon got worse as Forest fell 3-0 behind by half-time thanks to Ross Wallace's breakaway effort, Callum Davidson's penalty and Matt James' stunning piledriver.

Yet Davies hit back and said: "I was very proud coming back here and always will be, being the most successful manager in its history.

"I know that underneath that energy and desire to win the game there's a huge amount of respect.

"They will sit back in their lounges and kitchens tonight and as much as they shout and bawl, they will certainly appreciate what took place not only here but also at Derby.

"The atmosphere was the same when I went back to Derby with Forest.

"But where is the morality and respect in football nowadays?

"You're only as good as your last game in this business and people forget very quickly, especially when they don't know the facts.

"But whether they like or respect me, I will still sleep tonight.

"I know from the letters I've received not only from here but also Derby, there has been respect from many people and great admiration for what has been achieved."

Forest improved vastly after the break and Dexter Blackstock hit back for Forest with a 57th-minute penalty before substitute Robert Earnshaw cut the gap further with 14 minutes remaining.

Yet there was to be no equaliser for Davies to savour as Forest were condemned to their fifth successive away defeat in the Coca-Cola Championship.

Davies' players struggled badly to cope with Preston's first-half vibrancy and the Forest boss added: "It started in the warm-up.

"Our warm-up was atrocious and having watched that I was concerned because it was sloppy and slack.

"There was no tempo and we just didn't start, but there's no doubt that the home side thoroughly deserved their victory because they competed better than us and won second balls better than us.

"But in the second half we changed it around and totally dominated.

"We should have got something out of the game and if there had been another five minutes I think we would have got another."

Here's the Preston fans views on a pre-match interview where the little "Runt" declared he was the best ever Preston manager.

I get the impression they don't share his opinion. He reminds me of a uneducated deluded Scottish version of Jose Mourinho, although the only medal he has won and probably likely to ever win is the Championship play off final. When Forest get rid which they will next season he'l end up where he belongs, in a Haggis factory in Inverness.

Groundhog day - deja vu - :D

from forest mad

Getting sick of hearing Billy' whiterings! ...

Right i've had enough of BD whittering on about squad depth etc...which is a smokescreen for some of his shortcomings....He knew the score with the TP from the start and the club have done wonders i believe squad wise so far and we have possily over achieved thus far.

There alot of teams in this division with alot worse squads than us but they just get on with it...blackpool a good example.

I find it a tad hypocritical of Billy to say we aren't ready to go up it would wrong to etc...then turn around and say we haven't got a good enough squad to go up?....What do you want then?.

The truth is our squad is fine it's just Biilly' constant tinkering and the fact that our squad players just aren't good enough (McGoldrick, Adebola, Garner, McCleary to name a few) is the reason were faultering now.

Just shut the feck up Billy play our strongest 11 week in week out and im sure we'll be ok....Play offs it is but im confident we can do ok and if we don't go up it's not a disaster as we can build on what has been a decent season so far considering last years horror show!
