Barker closer to Rams return but Leacock injury is a concern

SHAUN Barker has been pencilled in for a comeback in the Reserves next week but Derby County are concerned about Dean Leacock's latest injury.

Barker and Leacock are recognised as the Rams' first-choice pairing at centre-back but injuries have blighted both players this season.

Barker, the club's big summer signing from Blackpool, has started only half of the 24 League games.

Leacock has made a dozen appearances.

A thigh problem has kept Barker out of the last seven matches and his first chance of a return to action is the reserve fixture against Walsall at Alfreton Town's Impact Arena a week tomorrow.

"We've pencilled him in for the game but he's going to have to train before the end of the week to be ready for that," said manager Nigel Clough.

Leacock felt some discomfort in his knee after the home defeat by Doncaster Rovers last month and has sat out the last three games.

Derby say they will know more about the injury once the knee settles.

"He jarred it in the Doncaster game and it is still quite sore," said Clough.

"We're investigating it further because the scan hasn't shown anything but there is obviously something there."

Leacock's recent run of five consecutive starts in the first team was the 25-year-old's best in 14 months.

He made eight consecutive starts early in the 2008-9 season.

Miles Addison and Jake Buxton formed a centre-back partnership in the draws against Newcastle United and Millwall in the FA Cup.

Left-back Jay McEveley has also filled in at centre half.

He is available again for Saturday's home League game against Ssausagehorpe United after missing the Millwall tie due to suspension.

DEAN Leacock is facing four to six weeks on the sidelines.

The Derby County defender suffered bone bruising in a knee during the home defeat by Doncaster Rovers shortly before Christmas.

He has missed the last three games.

"The injury will take that amount of time to settle," said manager Nigel Clough.

Injuries have restricted Leacock to only 11 starts this season.

Shaun Barker is pencilled in for next week's reserve team game against Walsall as he looks to recover from a thigh problem but defender Mitch Hanson has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery.

The 21-year-old centre-back has made one senior appearance as a substitute for the Rams.

Lee Croft returned to training yesterday. The winger missed Saturday's FA Cup tie at Millwall through illness.

I have to agree with Mr Cumbrian, get him fit and ship him out. Let Addison build up a partnership with Barker and we have Buxton, Jay and Connolly to jiggle things around when needed. Not that we'd be able to sell him now till the summer anyhow.
