Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are investigating Craig Bellamy's clash with a fan after the full-time whistle at Old Trafford. Bellamy who scored twice in City's heartbreaking 4-3 Premier League defeat to rivals United, shoved the fan in the face while he was being restrained by stewards.

City boss Mark Hughes called the fan's decision to enter the field of play 'unacceptable' despite Bellamy needlessly getting involved following the classic encounter.

Police have confirmed that neither party has lodged a complaint, although that will not stop them making further enquiries despite the bulk of the fans on the day behaving impeccably.

Detained

"At the end of the derby between united and city at Old Trafford, a member of the public ran on to the pitch, and was detained by police and security staff," confirmed a police spokesman.

"During this time, there was an altercation between the man and a player from Manchester City FC.

"No formal complaint has been made by either party but police are continuing to make inquiries."

Police will also investigate a coin-throwing attack on City substitute Javier Garrido who was struck as he headed down the tunnel at half-time.

The missile was launched from the home section of the crowd as Garrido walked alongside the probable intended target, Carlos Tevez who was jeered throughout by United fans following his transfer from the home team in the summer.
