vicky-27
DERBY County's players have volunteered to give up their bonuses this season if they fail to finish in the top six of the Championship. A number of the senior players got together and, with the backing of the dressing room, they have decided to waive the payment unless the team ends the campaign high in the table. They feel the gesture is the "right thing to do" due to the tough financial climate facing football and the fact the team has under-achieved in the past two seasons. Derby were relegated from the Premier League in 2007-8 with a record-low number of points and finished 18th in the Championship last season. Robbie Savage (pictured), one of the senior players in the squad, said: "We have not deserved a bonus in the past two years and so have decided not to collect our bonuses this season unless we finish in the top six. http://iad.anm.co.uk/house/1x1 "You can call it a gesture of goodwill but we prefer to look on it as the right thing to do. "These are tough times financially in football and we believe we should only be rewarded for having a good season." Boycie
I'll back that up, If we don't finished the season as top forum on google search, then I'll give up my bonus too. Times are hard, and I'll do my bit.
David
Great gesture by the players, football players across the country should sit up and take notice of Derby County players right now, these players want to play for Derby County unlike alot of money grabbing cnuts. It would be nice for the club to come out and do a similar thing, free shirt for every season ticket holder for the past 3 years if we don't finish in the top half? Makes you think all the hot air coming from down the A52 from Gunter, Anderson and co. how they are going to win the league, I'd like to see if they would put their money where their mouth is. vicky-27
Heard the interview with Sav this morning about it - he says it was completely the players idea - nothing to with the club - they made the decision between them as they felt they didn't deserve it - great interview - Sav also has a new column in the Mirror starting today
Perky1106
This is a really good gesture. Though it defeats the point of 'bonus' doesn't it if you get it despite not finishing in the top 6. I have heard from Moor Farm the players are up for it and just love being here playing under Clough. If these encouraging signs appear on the pitch this will be a great season. Despite not being busy in the summer, I feel more confident than ever about Derby County.
