Right I've just Sussed out the Christmas special plot.

They go to the place beginning with T (they went there at the end of the last series too) where the doctor is supposed to die.

They fight the Daleks the cyber men amongst others - and en route save Gallifrey. The doctor dies and regenerates into Capaldi

They then get rewarded with a whole new cycle of 12 more regenerations by the high council of Gallifrey. Meaning when Capaldi leaves they can get a new guy in.
