Buxton to miss start of pre-season training

DERBY County defender Jake Buxton is set to miss the start of pre-season training as he continues to be troubled by injury.

The centre-back was sidelined towards the end of last season due to a problem affecting his groin and stomach.

And the Rams have so far been unable to cure the injury.

"Jake's had this groin/stomach injury, which we have had a problem diagnosing exactly what it is," said Derby manager Nigel Clough.

"He's been seeing specialists since the end of the season and nobody has been able to pinpoint yet what it is.

"We're hoping we can get to the bottom of it but he is unlikely to start pre-season at this stage."

Buxton, who made 24 appearances in his first season at Derby after joining from Burton Albion, said: "It is frustrating because I'm not a player who is used to sitting in the treatment room.

"It tests you as a player and as a person when you have times like this but I know I can come through it."

Fellow defender and last season's player of the year, Shaun Barker, meanwhile, is likely to join in full training about a week after the rest of the squad report back for pre-season on July 1.

Barker, who was back at Derby's Moor Farm training ground yesterday, is still recovering from a knee operation he had at the beginning of May.

"We'll have to be a bit careful with Shaun in pre-season," Clough added.

"I don't think he'll be able to join in with absolutely everything on the first day.

"He just needs to do enough to make sure he is fit and ready for the first match of the season.

"When the ground is so hard, even the grass, at this time of year, Shaun doesn't need pounding on his knee.

"It might be that he'll be doing a couple of other activities – like cycling or swimming – occasionally, instead of running."

Barker said: "I've got a couple more weeks of rehab to do.

"The running that the lads will be doing when they come back will probably be a bit soon for me but, fingers crossed, in a week or so, I'll be flying and joining in with the rest of the squad.

"I'm feeling fine now and, assuming there are no stumbling blocks, I should be fit and ready to go for the first game of pre-season."

Barker was joined at Moor Farm yesterday by striker Rob Hulse, who was also reporting for treatment as he recovers from groin surgery.

Defender Miles Addison was also back in the gym as he continues his long road to fitness following a foot injury.

Derby County defender Jake Buxton will today undergo surgery to correct the groin problem which has failed to clear up during the close-season.

The 25-year-old central defender consulted a specialist last week to take a closer look at the injury, which plagued his first season in Derby colours and restricted him to 24 appearances.

Buxton was a regular at the Rams' Moor Farm training complex over the summer

Head Physio Neil Sullivan told dcfc.co.uk: "Jake's groin has not settled and he is having surgery today to hopefully solve the problem."

It is hoped Buxton will not miss too much football; but it means he will miss the majority of Derby's pre-season campaign.

"He should be up and running in 4 to 6 weeks," added Sullivan.
