STRIKER Luke Varney is still likely to be surplus to requirements at Derby County now his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday has ended.

Varney's five goals in 20 appearances for Wednesday could not prevent them from being relegated to League One.

The 27-year-old has been on loan with the Owls for much of the season. They showed an interest in making his move permanent but Wednesday dropping out of the Championship could scupper any deal.

"Unfortunately, Sheffield Wednesday have gone down and so we will have to wait and see what happens," said Rams manager Nigel Clough.

"We are not too badly off in the striker department. We have got Rob Hulse and Kris Commons at the moment, we have got Chris Porter, we would like to sign Tomasz Cywka and Steven Davies is going to be fit.

"We are not too bad up there, so Luke might find himself surplus to requirements."

Varney has two years to run on his contract at Derby.

He signed from Charlton Athletic in January 2009 after initially spending a loan spell at Pride Park.

Varney was the final signing of Paul Jewell's reign as Rams boss.

He has scored one goal in 14 games for the Rams, 10 of them starts.

Derby are keen to bolster their attacking options this summer by bringing in Cywka, the Polish Under-21 international who has impressed during his loan stay from Wigan Athletic.

Clough has also confirmed an interest in Ssausagehorpe United's 20-goal frontman Gary Hooper and Everton's James Vaughan, who is currently on loan at Leicester City.
