KRIS Commons and Jake Buxton will tonight look to put themselves in contention for Derby County's Championship clash against Leicester City at the weekend.

Commons and Buxton are expected to return to action after injury in the Reserves' totesport.com League game against Port Vale at Alfreton Town's Impact Arena (7pm).

Commons has missed the last three matches with a hamstring problem.

Buxton is on his way back after a hernia operation. The defender's last appearance was in the defeat by Nottingham Forest at the end of August.

Rams manager Nigel Clough admits the reserve game provides him with a dilemma given the club's lengthy injury list.

"There are three or four players who will probably need a game but we have to balance that against them taking any knocks or getting injured, but we still have to play them," said Clough.

Commons' return could be a timely boost because Derby are short of fully-fit strikers to face Leicester.

James Vaughan, Steve Davies and Chris Porter are injured and Paul Dickov unavailable because he is on loan from the Foxes.

Rob Hulse will lead the attack and Commons would be an option to join him if Derby go into the game with two forwards.

The pair formed a fruitful partnership at times last season but Commons has had a stop-start season so far.

Injury and below-par form have seen the Scottish international make only three starts in Derby's 12 league and cup matches.

Dickov, midfielder Lee Hendrie and defender Mitch Hanson are also set to play tonight.

"It'll be a reasonable side out there. Ben Pringle and Arnaud Mendy will also play," said Clough.

Right-back Paul Connolly is making progress with his foot injury.

"He'll train this week but won't do excessive crossing and shooting as his foot's still sore," said Clough.

It's a doozie tomorrow! Hope the best team wins blah blah ;) If our recent derby against Covscum was anything to go by it will probably a crap, cagey game of football tomorrow, with very little in it. I'm just praying that Robbie fecking Savage does nothing of note!

Lee Croft always does well against us, we just need super Stevie Howard and the thoroughly unpredictable Matt Oakley to see us through.
