Paul Greens contract

It says in the DET that Paul Green is also out of contract at the end of the season. I thought he had a longer deal. I guess he will be on decent money though from the Jewell era.

DERBY County are likely to wait for the loan market to open again before they add to their squad.

That is the message from both manager Nigel Clough and chief executive Tom Glick.

The transfer window closes at 11pm tonight but the Rams need to off-load players before any more new faces can come in.

They have brought in 10 players since the end of last season, although three – Frank Fielding, Jamie Ward and Theo Robinson – were on loan at Pride Park last season and Kevin Kilbane is a loan capture from Hull City.

The club's wage bill has risen and needs to come down.

"We all thought we would have got some more players out over the last two or three months and so we will concentrate on the outs first and see what happens then," said Clough.

"We are delighted with the squad. We would love to add one or two but we are delighted with the players we have got.

"We'll see how it goes this week but it might be that we look at the loan market once it reopens."

Derby have a number of senior players who are in the final year of their contracts. They include Stephen Bywater, Dean Leacock, Stephen Pearson and Paul Green.

The window for emergency loans is open again from September 8 and while Glick says Derby are continuing to make enquiries and calls about possibly strengthening the squad, he is also pointing to the loan market.

"It is no secret we expected, and needed, to move some players on during this window to balance the squad with the new intake, and that element has so far proved challenging," he said.

"This means we are carrying wages and players that are not part of our plans for this campaign, or beyond, and we need to rectify that.

"It is important not to abandon our philosophy of responsible governance of this club.

"However, we remain committed to strengthening the team wherever possible.

"It may now be that we wait for the loan window to open and take advantage of that particular market."

Glick stresses that using the loan system does not mean the club is looking for short-term fixes.

"Frank Fielding, Jamie Ward and Theo Robinson all started life here as loan signings and all three have played big parts as permanent signings in the good start we have made to the season," said Glick.
