Derby defender Russell Anderson will be out of action until after the first international break of the season.

The centre-back picked up a groin problem in the opening minutes of Derby's opening day victory at Leeds United.

The former Aberdeen and Sunderland defender battled on until interval, where he was replaced by Shaun Barker.

Anderson sat out the Carling Cup tie at Crewe in midweek and has been ruled out of Derby's forthcoming games against Cardiff City, Coventry City and Queens Park Rangers before the international break in early September.

It is hoped the 31-year-old will be fit enough to return to action on 11 September when Derby face Sheffield United at Pride Park.

Anderson told dcfc.co.uk: "I'm really disappointed to be out for a few weeks, especially after coming through all of pre-season unscathed.

"I'm focused on working as hard as I can in my rehabilitation and returning after the international break."
