Steve Davies update

PREPARATION for next season has started more than three months early for Derby County striker Steve Davies.

Davies is building his fitness for the 2010-11 campaign after another injury-hit season.

The 22-year-old has started only seven League games and featured in less than half of the Rams' 48 fixtures in all competitions.

He has started three of the last four matches and played 90 minutes at centre-half for the Reserves against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Monday night, a run-out designed to add to his fitness levels.

"Steven is injury-free and a run-out at centre-half in the Reserves did not do him any harm," said manager Nigel Clough.

He starts building his fitness now for next season. He starts now to get ready for July 1 when we report back for pre-season training and August 7, when the season starts."

Clough has said he believes a fully-fit Davies can make a big impact in the Championship.

"He can create and score goals. He can also fill a number of positions," said Clough.

But the manager has been frustrated by the player's injury record.

Davies suffered a serious knee injury when he was at Tranmere Rovers in 2007-8 and had a stop-start first season with Derby.

He suffered a fractured eye socket and cheekbone, had a hernia operation and struggled with a groin problem.

This season, he has been hit by ankle and hamstring problems.

He has started only 20 games since he signed in the summer of 2008 but he showed in the victory at Peterborough in January and by scoring a wonderful equaliser against Millwall in an FA Cup third-round replay what he can do.

The majority of the squad will finish a week or so after the end of the season but the likes of Steve Davies, Dean Leacock and Kris Commons will carry on training for a few weeks and will be back early as well because they have missed so much football this season," said Clough

Add his ankle to the list -

The 22-year-old, who has started just seven league games this season due to the injury, will undergo surgery on Monday in a bid to get fully fit for next season.

Davies first sustained the injury against Plymouth Argyle earlier in the season and will now miss Derby’s remaining games against Bristol City and Cardiff City.

"Steven will have an operation and that's him done for the season now. He has this thing on his ankle, possibly from the Plymouth game, and will be out for between four and six weeks," Clough told the club’s official website.

"He will be back training on June 1, four weeks before everybody else.

"The timing of the operation is important. If we leave it to the end of the season and then he is out for six weeks, he would only be back a couple of weeks before everybody else, which would not be enough for him."

Davies has made 46 appearances for the Rams since joining from Tranmere Rovers in June 2008, scoring six goals.
