Reading desperately need to bring someone in or they face going to Derby County this Saturday with in-form Grzegorz Rasiak as their only fit striker. Simon Church suffered a groin injury during last weekend's 2-1 home win over Blackpool and is a major doubt while Shane Long has been recovering from an ankle problem, though he will play for the reserves in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Bristol Rovers today (Wednesday) and the club's Hogwood Park training ground.

Reading have also lost Noel Hunt for the season following knee surgery so Rodgers will be praying Long is fit and available this weekend.

But Royals' boss also hopes to bring in at least one more striker on loan before the deadline at midnight tomorrow, and possibly even two.

Fingers crossed they don't get anyone in.

Good news chaps and chapesses

===========================================

ROYALS director of football Nick Hammond admits it is "highly unlikely" they will sign a striker before tomorrow's loan transfer deadline.

Clubs have until midnight on Thursday to complete any business but Reading appear to have called off their chase following three knock-backs in past couple of weeks.

Boss Brendan Rodgers is understood to have been rebuffed by his old club Chelsea in the last few days after enquiring about 18-year-old Italian starlet Fabio Borini.

Hammond told the Chronicle: "I think it is highly unlikely something will happen before the deadline.

"We have been asking questions about players but they weren't available and we're not bringing players in for the sake of it."

Meanwhile, Icelandic trialist Gunnar Thordvalsson scored twice for Reading reserves today in a 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

Shane Long and Chris Armstrong also continued their recoveries with 90 minutes each.

Long should be available for Saturday's trip to Derby County while fellow striker Simon Church is also hopeful of making the trip to Pride Park despite limping out of last weekend's 2-1 home win against Blackpool.
