Day
THREE goals in five minutes late on gave Derby County a 4-1 victory over Ilkeston Town in last night's friendly at the New Manor Ground. Ilkeston, the Blue Square North side, took the lead before Gary Teale equalised to send the teams in level at the break. Substitute Henrik Ojamaa put the Rams in front seven minutes from time and other goals followed from Aleksander Prijovic and Arnaud Mendy. The game was part of the deal that took Ben Pringle from Ilkeston to Derby and the young midfielder was captain for the night. Seven of the Rams team that started Saturday's victory over Sheffield Wednesday lined up and there was a place on the right-side of midfield for Australian international Ruben Zadkovich, who is on his way back after a lengthy spell out with a groin injury. The rest of the first-team squad watched from the stands including skipper Robbie Savage, Lee Croft, Rob Hulse and Shaun Barker. There was a minute's applause before kick-off in memory of former Rams defender Geoff Barrowcliffe, who died recently, aged 77. He also played for Ilkeston. Derby found themselves trailing after 16 minutes when Jay McEveley, a goal hero at the weekend, upended Amari Morgan-Smith in the area with a clumsy, heavy challenge. The Ilkeston player dusted himself down to fire his penalty low past Stephen Bywater's right hand. But Teale pulled the Rams level six minutes later. Paul Dickov worked hard to gain possession. He fed Zadkovich whose cross found its way to Teale and he volleyed low past Dan Lowson from eight yards. Ilkeston were denied the lead again when Bywater did well to keep out a diving header from Joe Harris after the striker met a centre from Morgan-Smith. At the other end, Teale saw a shot parried by Lowson, who also saved Pringle's header at his near post as Derby looked for a second goal. Ilkeston changed from blue to yellow shirts for the second half and manager Kevin Wilson, the ex-Rams striker, made a host of substitutions. Zadkovich played just over an hour and showed up well considering he has been out for so long. Lee Hendrie saw an effort cleared off the line before Ojamaa swapped passes with Mendy and took his time to score with a low finish in the 83rd minute. Prijovic added a third two minutes later and Mendy completed the scoring on 87 minutes.
