Day
THERE is mixed news for two of Derby County's summer signings before Saturday's opening Championship fixture against Peterborough United. Lee Croft (below) has shaken off a knee injury and is set to make his debut in the clash at Pride Park Stadium. But Shaun Barker, Derby's £900,000 signing from Blackpool, is still recovering from a thigh strain. Croft signed on a Bosman free after leaving Norwich City and the right winger featured in five of the seven first-team friendlies. He twisted his knee in the victory over Exeter City and sat out the win against Notts County at Meadow Lane as well as last Saturday's draw with Stoke City. The 24-year-old trained yesterday. "Lee is fine and that's a plus for us," said manager Nigel Clough. "He joined in for the first time for a week or so. He will train tomorrow and as long as he doesn't feel anything, he will start on Saturday." Barker is another player who has not featured since the Exeter game. "Shaun has been doing some light training," said Clough. "He has got half a chance of making the Rotherham game on Tuesday. "He won't be fit for Saturday. We might throw him on the bench as cover, not sure." Derby are also without Dean Leacock (groin) and so Miles Addison and Jake Buxton are in the frame to fill the centre-back positions. Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson has left the door open for Craig Mackail-Smith and Dean Keates to start against Derby. Both players have been struggling with injury but were given an hour in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat by Sunderland. Sunderland are the fourth Premier League side Posh have played in pre-season. They lost against Tottenham and Aston Villa, and drew with Fulham. "It's been a great pre-season because we've only got one injury in Chris Whelpdale," said Ferguson. "We've learnt from the games, I've been pleased with what I've seen and we're ready for the Championship."
