There is a terrific article on the Derby Evening Telegraph site by a 94 year old who saw his first Derby game 90 years ago.

I find it fascinating that someone who was watching Derby in the 1920s is still following them. One of the names he mentioned was Jimmy Hagan. He left Derby for Sheffield United in 1937 and was still playing for the Blades 20 years later. I mentioned him to an old chap who can remember games from the 1950s and he said Hagan was a very good player in a poor team.

About forty years after he made his debut for us Hagan returned to Derby as manager of Benfica when we played them in the European cup in the 1972/73 season. I was working away in those days and I missed the game and all the pre-match build up so I don't know if any fuss was made about Hagan coming back to Derby after all those years. Most of the Baseball Ground would have changed a lot from his days, but I bet the changing rooms were exactly the same.

He seems to have been a "no nonsense" manager. According to the link below the West Brom team went on strike because he made them train in shorts in very cold weather. I dread to think what he would have made of those players you now see training with hats, scarfs and gloves.

As a young 72 year old ram fan I can remember the likes of Jessie Pye when he played at the Baseball ground. Also I watched all the games against Boston United.I actually had the misfortune to have my family all move to Boston the year after the 6-0 drubbing in the fifties. In fact Ray Wilkins the Boston centre forward was my PE teacher at Derwent boys school. I got a lot stick from the Boston supporters over the years but once a Ram always a Ram and proud of it.

There's a nice page about that game here :

Were you one of the Derby fans cheering for Mr Wilkins?

I remember the Derby v Boston 1974 game in the following link. There were a few well known names in that Boston team. Phil Waller was a Derby regular in the early 60s. Howard Wilkinson went on to become a legend in his own mind. Matt Tees was one of the best known players in the lower leagues in the 1960s.
