Sky Sports News understands MK Dons boss Roberto Di Matteo is set to be named the new manager of West Brom within the next 12 to 24 hours.

The former Chelsea and Italy midfielder has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Tony Mowbray after Alan Irvine and Dave Jones, of Preston and Cardiff, respectively, were ruled out of the running.

Di Matteo is reported to have impressed during his interview with West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace and he is now expected to be officially named at some point on Wednesday.

It is said that a six-figure compensation package has already been agreed with the Dons, and Di Matteo could be in charge of West Brom in time for the return to pre-season training.

Di Matteo - whose assistant, Eddie Newton, will follow him to The Hawthorns - took charge of MK Dons last summer after Paul Ince left to manage Blackburn.

The 39-year-old's first Championship game in charge would be the home meeting with former Premier League rivals Newcastle on 8th August.
