ESPN will broadcast live Premier League football for the first time in Britain after picking up the rights from troubled broadcaster Setanta. The Premier League on Monday announced that Disney-owned ESPN will screen 46 matches next season and 23 in each of the three seasons from 2010-11.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "They have a formidable worldwide reputation and experience in sports and I am sure we will enjoy a long and fruitful relationship with them."

ESPN already has two channels in Britain, one covering American sports and another showing archived action.

Sky Sports has the rights to air the majority of Premier League matches live in Britain.
