vicky-27
Joey Barton deserved a red card for his wild challenge on Liverpool's Xabi Alonso, Newcastle manager Alan Shearer said after seeing his side lose 3-0 at Anfield on Monday. Barton, whose career has been blighted by off-field problems including a spell in prison, was sent off after 78 minutes of the Premier League match for scything down Alonso with Newcastle trailing by two goals. "I am not happy, I was bitterly disappointed with the way that happened," Shearer told the BBC. "I put him in to do a specific job and I asked him to try and stay calm in the heat of the battle but it was a stupid tackle and he deserved to be sent off. "He now misses the rest of the season. He did keep his nose clean for 75 or 80 minutes or whatever it was, but it's about 90 minutes not 75." Barton was making his first appearance for over three months following injury. Shearer is still waiting for his first win after five matches in charge of the ailing Magpies who remained third-from-bottom of the standings with three matches left in the season.
