Davies out for the season

The curse of the broken foot has struck Derby County again with Steve Davies the latest star to be ruled out for the season.

The 21-year-old will not play again in 2008/09 after scans revealed a hairline fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

Davies will undergo an operation on Friday to have screws inserted into his foot and he now has his eyes on being fit and ready to go for pre-season training.

Rams manager Nigel Clough said the injury was a cruel blow to the former Tranmere Rovers man.

He added: "It's another injury problem we could well do without and is a bitter shame as Steve was just starting to get some regular first team football under his belt, which we believe he was benefiting from.

"He will have his op and then need to concentrate hard on getting himself right for the start of pre-season training; just like Miles Addison and Paul Green, who have had similar injuries.

"On the positive side though, Kris Commons and Chris Porter are getting closer to full fitness and may be in contention for our next game. We will have to wait and see."

Davies arrived from Tranmere last summer and soon made an impact on the team before being sidelined for almost three months by a fractured eye socket and then a hernia.

He was back at the end of the year and has been performing well on the left, right and as a central striker over recent weeks.

Davies has notched four goals in his 24 appearances, and joins two of his colleagues in sitting out the remainder of the campaign.

Miles Addison and Paul Green are definite absentees, while centre-half Dean Leacock is also expected to be out until next season.

Kris Commons (calf), Chris Porter (hip), Jay McEveley (hamstring) and Jordan Stewart (back) have all been sidelined of late but Clough hopes they will be fit to return after the international break.
