Back Op For Buxton

Derby County defender Jake Buxton will today undergo minor back surgery in a bid to put the last seven months of injury problems behind him.

The 25-year-old has not appeared for the Rams first-team since March and since then Buxton has been plagued by a muscle problem, with the root of the problem finally discovered after months of consulting specialists and surgeons.

Jake will have minor surgery today on his lumbar spine, which it is hoped will bring an end a frustrating few months for the centre-back.

The pain relates to one of the nerves in his lower back which has been getting pinched on its route out of his vertebrae, creating pain down into his leg.

The surgeon conducting the surgery has made the space for it to travel a little bit bigger to prevent any future pinching.

Jake is expected to be in the treatment room for around four to six weeks, before being in a position to return to full training.

He made 20 appearances for Derby last season after following manager Nigel Clough from Burton Albion to Pride Park in the summer of 2009.

His partnership with Shaun Barker at the heart of the defence midway through the season coincided with Derby's best run of the season, which included clean sheets and victories against promotion chasers Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.
