ramblur Posted October 2, 2010 Share Posted October 2, 2010 Have suddenly realised,to my horror,that I'm probably one of the oldest posters here.I started watching in the early sixties in the boys' pen behind the goal-I remember Reg always used to give us a wave. Seem to remember us beating Ssausagehorpe 6-2 one Christmas and then getting tonked a few days later.This was very hard to understand for a young lad,and it was only later in life that I found the explanation for such common anomalies at Yuletide.Apparently it was so that both teams got a Christmas win bonus.Then I got to thinking what happened to the poor teams that played top of the table sides over this period-hardly likely to be any reciprocal arrangements there? Does anyone know what happened in those situations?Was it a bleak Christmas for a lot of players?Presumably the League must have turned a blind eye to all of this,as it must have been fairly obvious (stewards' enquiry sort of stuff),if not so to a small boy.
