Derby County's last goal in the reign of a King

Connor Hourihane's opener against Wycombe on Saturday was the club's first in the reign of a king for 70 years and seven months. The previous one came in a 2-1 win at Burnden Park in Division One on 2nd February 1952 when Ray Wilkins followed Johnny Morris' opener for the Rams. King George VI died on 6th February.

Ray's son Stuart is a lifelong friend and sits with me in the East Stand. When I asked Stuart the question yesterday, he guessed at Jackie Stamps but was proud and delighted when I told him it was Ray, who many of our generation will remember as the manager of the Derby Boys team in 1960s and 1970s when he was a teacher at Mackworth Secondary School and then Parkfield Cedars Comprehensive when those two schools amalgamated in 1969.
