Derby County have today secured the signings of talented youngsters John Brayford and James Bailey.

Brayford (22) and Bailey (21) have joined the Rams for an undisclosed fee on three-year deals from League Two Crewe Alexandra.

Manager Nigel Clough has made his intentions clear for some time to assemble a young, hungry squad to build for the future.

He believes both Brayford and Bailey fit the bill perfectly as his squad begins to take shape for the 2010/11 season.

Defender Brayford has been a long-term target of Clough's since his arrival at Pride Park in January 2009 while midfielder Bailey is another player who the Rams have kept a close eye on throughout this season.

Clough said: "We are delighted to bring John and James in; both are young players who have a very bright future in the game.

"We've made no secret of the fact we have been interested in John for some time, so to finally land him is very satisfying.

"I know all about John having worked with him at Burton Albion and I have no doubt he will be able to make the step up to the Championship.

"James is a determined midfielder who has been impressive every time we have watched him and we're delighted he has also joined us."

Stoke-born Brayford came through the ranks at Burton Albion under Clough' and caught the eye of a number of Football League clubs, and joined Crewe as a result in September 2008.

He won the Fans' Player of the Year award in his first season with Crewe as they suffered relegation from League One.

The right-back wore the captain's armband for the Alex last season and was also named in the League Two Team of the Season by his fellow professionals.

Bailey is a graduate of the successful Crewe Academy which has produced players such as Danny Murphy, Dean Ashton, Seth Johnson and Rob Hulse and established himself as a regular in Crewe's midfield during the season which has just come to a close.

Both players' registrations will take effect from 1 June 2010.

That picture is an absolute classic of its kind. Hope they both become hugely successful so in the future people will drag that picture up, to show how young men lucky enough to still have their hair, bugger things up with stupid haircuts and beards!
