Leicester City and former Newcastle United footballer Nolberto Solano has denied raping a 22-year-old woman.

Police arrested the 35-year-old Peruvian international at a house in Gosforth, Newcastle, in the early hours of Monday.

The arrest followed an allegation of rape made by a 22-year-old woman from the city.

Northumbria Police said inquiries are continuing and the player has been released on bail.

Solano's solicitor Simon McKay said: "I can confirm that Mr Solano has been the subject of an allegation of rape but denies the allegation fully.

"I have been in contact with Northumbria Police today on Nolberto's behalf and we are cooperating fully and assisting them with their inquiries."

Solano became the first Peruvian to play in the Premier League when he joined Newcastle United in 1998 for £2.5 million from Argentinian side Boca Juniors.

Nicknamed Nobby by fans, he spent eight years at Newcastle and has also played for Aston Villa and West Ham.

The midfielder, who still lives in Newcastle, completed his move to Championship side Leicester City in January.
