O'Brien Makes Rams Return

Mark O'Brien played his first game since undergoing heart surgery in November for Derby County's Academy yesterday afternoon.

The 17-year-old Irishman underwent the surgery to repairheart valves.

It has been a remarkable year for O'Brien, who made his first-team debut for Derby at Watford last season aged just 16.

He followed by up by being named the Academy's player of the year and the Republic of Ireland's top under-16 player.

The heart operation however has far from held O'Brien back and he was awarded a professional contract with the Rams before the turn of the year.

Since his operation, he has made rapid progress and after getting the all-clear to step up his return in March he played 45 minutes for the Rams' Academy against Wallsend Boys Club yesterday in a friendly match.

Manager Nigel Clough commented: "It is great to see Mark back in action.

"He has been through a lot, but the character he is he has simply taken it all in his stride.

"The decision was for him to play the first half, but in typical fashion he wanted to play longer!

"He is making good progress and we're delighted."

He is now in contention for a place in the under 18 side for their FA Premier League Academy match with West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
