FORMER Derby County player Tony Parry, who was twice signed by Brian Clough, has died at the age of 64 after a short illness.

Burton-born Parry was a tough-tackling midfielder and joined Hartlepools United in 1965 when Clough and Peter Taylor were in charge.

He was player of the year when Hartlepools won promotion in 1967/8 and Clough paid £3,000 to take the player to Derby County in January 1972.

Parry, who started out at Burton Albion, played seven games for the Rams and made his debut in the first leg of the Texaco Cup final against Airdrie.

He went on loan to Mansfield Town before he joined Gresley Rovers in August 1976, where he was club captain.
