Porter out for "months" with hip injury

DERBY County have been dealt another blow with the new Championship campaign only days away.

Striker Chris Porter is facing an operation on his nagging hip problem and that would mean the 25-year-old being sidelined for months.

The news came as Giles Barnes was undergoing surgery on his ruptured Achilles tendon.

Porter was Nigel Clough's first signing as Rams manager when he arrived from Motherwell in January for £400,000.

He made a promising start with three goals in as many games before the hip injury ended his season in early March.

Derby hoped rest during the close season would be the answer but the injury has flared up again.

"We are looking towards him probably needing an operation, we are just waiting to have it confirmed," said Clough.

"It is very frustrating because we are in the hands of specialists and everything and if they had said this last March or something he would have had it done and been fit by now.

"He is going to be out for the next few months as well.

"It is a blow for him – a blow for us all. We are going to lose him for the first part of the season.

"It's one of those where he could limp through a few weeks and make it worse. That might make the recovery time longer.

"We think he can still be back at Christmas time and we will still have half the season to go.

"We are trying to look at it as the glass being half full at the moment."

Derby's strikers have been struck by cruel luck during pre-season.

Rob Hulse has not featured in any of the friendlies and underwent a minor operation on his groin two weeks ago.

Last season's leading scorer is not fit to start against Peterborough United in Saturday's opening fixture at Pride Park.

"Hopefully, we can get him back on the pitch next week sometime. He is stepping up his training," said Clough.

Kris Commons came through 90 minutes in Tuesday's friendly at Solihull after hamstring trouble and is set to be on the bench against Peterborough as is Luke Varney, who has had a bout of flu.

Steve Davies (pictured) is ready to start up front.

"Luke Varney has just started training again. He is not 100 per cent but he will be available for the bench," said Clough.

"So Steve Davies will be the prime candidate to start and possibly the only candidate.

"He has been very impressive up there in pre-season."

Derby are waiting for news of how long Barnes will be out.

"It will certainly be a few months but it depends on the state of the rupture," said Clough.

"It's a big blow for him because he has been out the best part of two years with injuries, so this just adds to his woes.
