Players from England’s 1990 squad including Gazza and Peter Shilton have already agreed to turn out in a rematch of the dramatic World Cup defeat to Germany.

The first three players to be joining Matthaus in the line-up will be former Tottenham midfielder Steffen Freund, ex-Sunderland defender Thomas Helmer and Freddi Bobic.

Freund said: “I expect that the England lads will really want to win this for Sir Bobby and wont want us to be taking the trophy back home to Germany, but we always come to win and this game will be no different.

“Sir Bobby is loved around the world and we are honoured to be a part of this historic occasion in his honour, but I am afraid we won’t be going easy on the England team he puts out.â€Â

Peter Shilton OBE, who holds the record for the most England caps with 125, said: “We are prepared for the Germans and this gives us a chance to re-live this great rivalry and win the match for Sir Bobby.

“It would be a fitting result and a great feeling to hold the Sir Bobby Robson Trophy.
