Young defender makes Conference move to gain first-team experience.

Derby County Under 21s defender Josh Lelan has joined Skrill Premier side Gateshead on a month-long loan deal.

The central defender, who completed his two-year scholarship at Derby’s Academy in the summer, trained with his new-team mates on Thursday before completing the paperwork on his temporary switch to the North East this morning.

Lelan, who played for Derby’s Under 21s on Wednesday in their 4-2 win over Coventry City, is in line to make his debut for Gary Mills’ side in their away game at Tamworth tomorrow afternoon.

Gateshead are currently 19th in the table after nine matches, with just seven points to their name.

Manager Nigel Clough said: “It’ll be good for Josh to get out and play some competitive first-team football and we know he’ll be in good hands with Gary Mills too, who is someone we know well.”

Lelan, 18, has been an unused substitute for Derby’s first-team on a handful of occasions but is yet to make his first-team bow.
